Topic and Main Idea?

Topic is the main core of the overall content of the article, the main idea is information that tells about a topic, title, paragraph, or text. The main idea is not always explained at the beginning of the paragraph, but can be placed in the middle or at the end of the paragraph.

How to Determine the Topic?

1. Read the first line of each paragraph
2. Look for keywords, usually keywords are often repeated either at the beginning, middle or end of paragraphs, especially the conclusion section.

There are 2 main types of ideas, namely:

1. Stated: the main idea explained very clearly in the paragraph.
2. Implicit: the main idea is not written clearly, and to find out we can see the instructions given in each paragraph.

How to limit Main idea?

This aims to limit space so that our reading does not get off topic

• The topic must be in a central position
• The topic should be in a central position and place the details around the first topic circle
• Decide which details to choose
• Asking whether the sector can still be detailed further or not.

How to Determine the Main Idea?

1. Identify the topic.
2. Identify what the author has to say about the topic.

Kinds of Main Ideas

• Deductive paragraphs have the main idea in the first sentence of the paragraph
• Inductive paragraphs have the main idea in the last sentence of the paragraph
• Mixed paragraphs have the main idea in the sentence in the middle of the paragraph
