Introduction to course outline and overview of reading for general communication

Welcome back on my blog. As I said in the previous blog, I will share what I've learned from the University. I think I forgot to inform that I am from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, and here I am learning about Reading for General Communication.

Before going into the main material, I will share about what is Reading? 







Introduction to course outline and overview of reading for general communication

Reading is a process to understand meaning and aims to get information after reading a passage, regardless of what media the reader uses during the reading process. Although the reasons for reading may be different, the main purpose of reading is to understand the text. In reading, there are several components that are used in understanding the meaning of a reading. Here are the components in reading :

•           Pre Reading

The first is the pre-reading stage, a strategy that can be done by looking at the title and making a list of all the information that comes to mind about the title and to make a decision to continue reading the book or not.

•           During Reading

The second stage occurs during reading, the reader makes predictions while they are reading and confirms by writing what is obtained from the reading, so the reader reads and writes at the same time.

•           After Reading

The last stage occurs after reading and the reader will retell the story, determine the elements of the story, answer questions that arise in the reader's mind, and/or compare it with other texts. For example, readers can make a summary, they can reduce it to a more concise understanding.


Reading Comprehension

Reading is a process to understand meaning and aims to get information after reading a passage, regardless of what media the reader uses during the reading process. Although the reasons for reading may be different, the main purpose of reading is to understand the text. In reading, there are several components that are used in understanding the meaning of a reading. Here are the components in reading :

  • Lexical understanding
After the reader has read all the texts, the teacher will ask if there are difficulties in understanding the words or maybe there are new words that the reader has not understood, then the teacher will explain them by giving the reader the synonyms of these words.
  • Literal understanding
The reader will learn to recognize the concept of the text and understand the meaning of the content of the text. This type of understanding can be done by skimming technique. Interpretive understanding The ability of the reader to generate ideas that arise when reading the text. Readers can also give different opinions, this type usually uses questions like "what if", "how" and "why".
  • Applied understanding
With the help of the teacher to apply it in real life, the reader can gain an understanding of the text from his experience of what value can be obtained.
  • Affective understanding
Readers can understand and follow the storyline, where they begin to understand how the characters in the story begin to enter the story and how the emotions are carried into the story.
  • Effective understanding
This type is effective in helping students become independent, strategic, and metacognitive readers who can develop and control and apply various comprehension strategies to ensure that they understand what they have read.
